Sociology AS & A212/11/2008 - |

What will I learn? Sociology at AS includes the study of Family, Education and Research Methods. In Sociology, we use a range of teaching methods including discussion, question and answer, note-taking, powerpoint, video, and debates. Sociology, essentially, is the study of society. We talk about how society works, and what the different groups are that make up society, in terms of ethnicity, gender, age and class. The questions that we will consider in ther first term are: • Why do we live in families? • How do family units work? • What do families prepare us for? A2 - We look at Religion, Power & Politics, Crime and Deviance and Theory and Method. How will I be assessed? AS - You will sit Unit 1 (the Family Unit) in January and Units 2 (Education and Research Methods) in the summer. All of these AS Units involve Short Answer Questions that are data response and own knowledge, then they have two short essay questions. We regularly use examples from the contemporary media to help with these exams, but they don't have to watch the news every night! A2 - There are still some short answer questions in the exam, but the essays are longer than at AS level. We sit Unit 3 in January, which leaves only the Unit 4 exam to be sat in the summer. What are the entry requirements? The entry requirements are the same as admission onto all AS and A2 Level courses at Biddenham which is 4 Grade C's at GCSE two being English and Maths. It obviously helps if you are interested in society and how it works. If you have enjoyed English, History, or the discussions in Citizenship or RE at GCSE, you are likely to enjoy Sociology at A Level. What are the costs? There are no extra costs involved in this course, as we usually have outside speakers into our lessons, rather than going outside school. Sometimes we attend a Revision Conference in Central London, if appropriate. Future opportunities Students with Sociology A Level are accepted onto all kind of degrees, from Nursing and Social Work to Journalism and Social Sciences. One of our past students is currently doing an Architecture degree at Manchester University! Sociology is a good course for progression into Public Services like the Police as the study of Crime and Deviance for example, fosters a good understanding of the workings of wider society. |
