Assessment will otherwise be through the completion of six assignments (two for each of the three modules), distributed by ILEX Paralegal Training and marked by your course tutor. You will be given a time frame within which to complete the assignments (see ILEX Contract). All assignments will involve a number of tasks, each of which will require research from a course manual, plus limited, complementary outside research. The written assignments are then completed. Each task must be completed to correct standard before a grade will be awarded.

HOW AND WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

The Paralegal course is designed to give you a clear view of the English legal system and other areas of law which include criminal law, contract law, law of tort and family law. You will be given lecture notes, your teacher will deliver the main aspects of each topic, and you will be expected to undertake individual and group work based on the teacher’s delivery.

Though there is a lot of detail to learn, your teacher will use a variety of methods to deliver the subject. There will be lectures, question and answer sessions, individual task work, group work, discussions, role-play, student presentations, timed exam questions and tests. Much of the information will be reproduced in diagrammatic form to make learning easier. You will be expected to complete SIX assignments throughout the year. To do this you will have to read a lot to re-enforce your knowledge and understanding, apply the law to problems and issues; carry out independent research, willingly contribute to class discussions and activities and be committed to hard work.

In addition, you can expect to visit the local and central London law courts, the Houses of Parliament, and a European country.

Sample Lesson: ‘The Nature & Role of the Criminal Law’.

•Your teacher will introduce you to definitions, legal terminology, the requirements and sentencing for various crimes.
•Students will be given a booklet with all the relevant materials and the assignment title.
•Students will then undertake detailed research into the area of law in order to complete the assignment tasks within a six week period.
•Your teacher will use the following methods to help improve your understanding of the area of law:

o‘applying the law to problem scenarios’, and
o‘distinguishing between the different crimes’.
oThe subject area will be summarised by teacher and class discussion.
•Your teacher will then give you feedback on your marked work.
