AS/A2 Leisure Studies The leisure studies course will allow students to develop an understanding of the structure of the leisure industry, an appreciation of the knowledge, understanding and skills required of anyone working in the industry an understanding of the connections between the different parts of the industry What will I learn? Subjects covered throughout the two years of the course are: The leisure industry, customer service, marketing, current issues in leisure, planning an event, working practices in leisure and employment in leisure How will I be assessed? Unit 1 – Internal (course work) - The Leisure Industry Unit 2 – External (one and a half hour examination) - Working practices in leisure Unit 3 – Internal (coursework) - The Leisure Customer Unit 4 – Internal (coursework) - Leisure in Action Unit 5 – External (one and a half hour examination) - Employment in Leisure Unit 6 – Internal (coursework) - Current Issues in Leisure What are the entry requirements? Entry Requirements to AS: No prior knowledge is required Four GCSE’s grade A* - C 2 to include English and Maths Entry Requirements to A2: AS in Leisure Studies grade A–E To study on the AS pathway you will need at least 4 GCSEs at grade C or above plus Adult Literacy and Adult numeracy, both at level 2; or 5 GCSEs at grade C or above. You will study 4 subjects. You will also study AS Critical Thinking and the Certificate in Sports Leadership. This pathway is worth up to 1,080 QCA points. What are the costs? There will be visits connected to the course such as the Paris 2007 visit. They will be used as case studies to enhance your knowledge, skills and understanding of the units being studied. There is a possibility of financial assistance to support such visits. Is there anything else I need to know? The course will appeal if you: •Have an interest in the leisure industry. You will developing an understanding of organisations - the markets they serve, working with customers, current issues, health, safety and security, in the commercial, non-commercial and voluntary sectors •Enjoy studying a subject that is relevant to your own lives. It will broaden your experiences •Want the opportunity to apply the theory of the course to practical work outside the classroom •Enjoy discovering about yourself in ‘hands-on’ situations •Want to find out more about the subject through research, team work and independent study •Wish to study a course which is active, fun and enjoyable Future opportunities •Follow a related degree at university •Work in the UK or abroad in hotels; become a centre manager for health, beauty, gyms or leisure facilities; work in sports development / coaching; involved in conferencing or banqueting management; organise corporate hospitality; manage human resources, sales and marketing, customer service, health, safety and security or event management |
