AS/A2 Product Design develops a critical understanding of the influences of technology on the products created by modern society. What will I learn? Design capability and its practical application are developed through the study of a range of products and the materials and processes involved in their manufacture. Design and Market Influences are explored to understand how products are designed and evolve over time. Students will be encouraged to develop their creativity and design capability through a number of design and make activities. Students develop a critical understanding of the influences which impact upon the processes and products of design and technological activity. ICT is used to enhance design capability through the application of a range of design software. Students will consider the social moral and cultural values inherent in design and technological activity. Critical evaluation skills will be developed through considering the functional, aesthetic, ethical, economic, environmental, social and cultural context within which design technological activity is conducted. How will I be assessed? AS - Assessment has three components Unit 1 Written paper 30% of the total AS mark (15% of A2 mark). Questions are primarily based on Materials and Components Unit 2 Coursework 40% of the total AS mark (20% of A2 mark). Approximately 40 hours of design and manufacturing activity Unit 3 Written paper 30% of the total AS mark (15% of A2 mark). Questions are primarily based on Design and Market Influences A2 - Assessment has three components Unit 4 Product Study 15% of A2 mark. – An in depth study of the design and manufacture of a product Unit 5 Course work 15% of A2 mark – A single design manufacture project of approximately 50 hours duration. Unit 6 Written paper 20% of A2 mark Questions are based on the themes covered in units 1 and 3 and further developed through the A2course What are the entry requirements? To study on the AS pathway you will need at least 4 GCSEs at grade C or above plus Adult Literacy and Adult Numeracy, both at level 2; or 5 GCSEs at grade C or above. You will study 4 subjects. You will also study AS Critical Thinking and the Certificate in Sports Leadership. This pathway is worth up to 1,080 QCA points. |
