You will be studying the two religions of Islam and Judaism. At AS in Islam you will study; The Background and origins of Islam, Beliefs and Practices. in Judaism you will study Sacred writings of Judaism, Beliefs and Practices What will I learn? At AS in Islam you will learn about Pre-Islamic Arabia: historical, geographical and religious context with a consideration of Jewish, Christian, Zoroastrian and Pagan influences. Muhammad as the final messenger of Allah: the Seal of the Prophets Beliefs about Allah and human relationships. Surahs 1 and 96. The Five Pillars: shahadah, salah, zakah, sawm, hajj and Muslim life. Worship and the mosque: in Muslim and non-Muslim countries; the Imam and Salat-ul-Jumu‘ah (Friday prayers) In Judaism you will learn The importance of Tenakh and Talmud. The origins, content and use of Tenakh. The origins, content, use and purpose of Talmud. Their importance for Jewish belief and life today. Ethical monotheism. The nature of a monotheistic G-d. The particular role of the Jews as a ‘chosen People.’ The role of ethical monotheism for Jewish life, Today - halakhah and mitzvoth. Worship in the home and synagogue. The roles of men and women; including the laws of purity. At A2 in Islam you will learn the Articles of belief: Allah, angels, scriptures, messengers, the last day, the divine decree. Surah 4. The Qur’an, Sunnah and Shari’ah as bases for Muslim life; ijtihad. The concept of jihad. The ummah and its implications for Muslim ethics. The first four Khalifahs and the spread of Islam to 732 CE. Origins and beliefs of Sunni Shi’a, and Sufi Islam. Practice of Islam in the Western World. At A2 in Judaism you will learn about the concept of the Land of Israel. The Messianic hope, with reference to Isaiah and Malachi The twentieth-century Holocaust and post- Holocaust theology. Different types of Judaism - Orthodoxy, Neo-Orthodoxy, Conservative, Reform, Progressive and Liberal; Hasidic Tradition. The diaspora: Ashkenazi and Sephardi Jews How will I be assessed? 100% Exam 4 papers What are the entry requirements? To study on the AS pathway you will need at least 4 GCSEs at grade C or above plus Adult Literacy and Adult Numeracy, both at level 2; or 5 GCSEs at grade C or above. You will study 4 subject from the blocking system. You will also study AS Critical Thinking and the Certificate in Sports Leadership. This pathway is worth up to 1,080 QCA points Future opportunities Counts as an acceptable A level for any University course and to any job that requires you to be educated to A level standards. |
