What Will I Learn?

Students are also encouraged to take part in the theatre visits that are arranged throughout the course. Homework is set weekly and usually takes the form of a written task. This course provides a sound basis for the study of Drama at A Level and provides opportunities to develop the key skills of working with others, solving problems and presentation that are invaluable in a wide range of careers.

You will study character and context, structure, shaping and plot, audience, defining performance space, improvisation, Genre, Style and convention and The Semiotics (signs and symbols) of Drama Theatre. You will learn to communicate, how to plan by selecting and interpreting appropriate genres, styles and conventions and how to develop your critical skills, through evaluation, analysis and reflection.

What Are The Entry Requirements?

All students are welcome to take Drama as an option at GCSE and at AS/A Level. Your final level in year 9 will give you an indication of your suitability to GCSE. You do not necessarily have previously studied Drama at GCSE to take AS/A2 or an Arts Award qualification. Students also have the opportunity to take the Arts Award as an additional qualification with Trinity Guildhall. All committed and interested students are welcome to opt for one our course, irrelevant of experience.

How Will I Be Assessed?

The examination papers cover the full range of grades from G to A*. There are two option routes through the course. Everyone will do coursework and then you may choose either to do a written paper or practical test called a Realisation Test. You will complete two assignments over the course. In the first assignment you will study test, exploring them through practical work through the eyes of Director, Designer, Deviser and Performer and cover the topics listed above. In the second assignment you wil devise a piece of drama from a stimulus (e.g. a photography or poem) that your teacher will give you. You will need to keep a portfolio of evidence of your work which your teacher will mark.

Realisation Test - If you choose the option in which you take the practical test you will be given a piece of script and a stimulus item (eg a photography or poem) by the examining board. You will explore these through practical work and develop one piece to perform for an examinter who will visit the school. You will need to keep a portfolio of evidence of your planning work which your teach will mark.

What Are The Costs?
The Drama Department aim to offer you theatre trips and workshops each term at a cost of cover travel and tickets for events. Also all students will be expected to buy a presentation book or plastic file to present their work.

Is There Anything Else I Need To Know?

There is a rich diversity of activities to get involved in form Bhangra workshops, Musical Theatre, Performance Poetry events at lunchtime and after school as well as visits to West End and local theatre and cultural events. There are also opportunities to get involved in other extra curricular opportunites such as working with Westfield Middle School and St. John`s students. Many students opt to take the Youth Art Leadership Award run in partnership with Trinity Guildhall as an extra qualification in Drama to enrich their experience (further details of this can be found on the BUS website or by visiting www.artsaward.org.uk).
